STATEMENT

Hello intenet people,

I think as we get further along in the course of relying completely on the internet for storage and sorting of our personal data

there is an ever-growing need for our personal secrecy. But what is more interesting is that conversely we have begun a pro-

-jection of ourselves into this unknown 'seen-by-all' arena with interfaces such as the popular Myspace.com, blogging servi-

-ces, and picture sharing sites. To what degree we will let this progress fascinates me and has inspired me to start this project.

'Message Log' is another experiment into this unknown territory.

I intend to post every message I receive through my voice mail here for all to listen.

Messages have always been very personal to me. They are a true looking glass into my life and can reveal very embarrassing,

fantastic, or saddening issues. That said, it will not always be easy for me to comply with this.

_

I have my own motivations for this experiment, but most importantly I intend to communicate this:

Take a minute to question your own fascination with my/other's personal life/lives.

Has this mass-voyeurism in our technology lead us to be falsely un-centered as beings?

Or, Is this decentralization a necessary direction for our evolution? How far do we intend to take it?

What has lead us to harbor personal lives and secrets? Are they even necessary? How have we come to this in our history?

After much pondering and debating, I have decided to make two small amendments to this project:

note 1. -- I have deleted the text that used to follow names in the 'WHO' column explaining my relation to the caller

note 2. -- I have added the sex of all 'No Name' callers 'WHO' column

note 3. -- As a final note, and also a subject of much questioning,

So an unfortunate accident has happened. I got a new cell phone around January and continued to collect my infrequent messages. I found out that my voice mail was deleting the messages I had stored after a certain number of days. I lost any messages between January 6th 2007 and February 6th. Technically, this is very disheartening coming to the one year mark and never missing a one.On a whole different level I have come very used to having these 'disposable' recordings of my contacts with society. To the point that it makes me sad to think of the people I was in communication with and the things I did during this new lost month.

So I am deciding to limit the longitude of this project to a year. I still may reincarnate it in an installation setting in the future.
